When I was 14 years old, I went on a school trip that was touted as a week in the mountains and a week in the city.

I was young, impressionable and pretty far outside of my comfort zone.

After backpacking through Yosemite for 7 days and sleeping the basement of a church for a week in downtown San Francisco, I came home to find things looked a little different.

My dad asked, “Did you have a good time?”
My mom asked, “Did you meet any new people?”
My brother asked, “Did you meet any girls?”
My sister asked, “Did it change you?”

Sure I had a good time and I met new people and some of them were female, but my sister’s question floored me.

I was out of my ordinary routine and had been exposed to so much new input that the way I looked at things and people had been altered – and that made them seem different. Things looked a little different because I had changed.
